Many people are not very clear about the meaning of VHF and UHF, the following BelFone tells you the answer.
VHF is the abbreviation for very high frequency, ranging from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. MHz stands for Megahertz, which is a unit of alternating current (AC) or electromagnetic (EM) wave frequency equal to one million hertz (1,000,000 Hz). The frequency range of BelFone VHF radios is usually 136-174MHz.
UHF is the abbreviation for ultra-high frequency, ranging from 300 MHz to 3,000 MHz. The frequency range of BelFone UHF radios is usually 350-520MHz.
Radio communication can work on both VHF and UHF. But, which is better?
VHF is mostly for outdoor use where you are free from obstructions. The frequencies of VHF travel further if they are not disrupted by barriers. The only time you will want to use VHF is if you are outside in a wide-open space like a field. VHF has smaller frequencies which means interference with other radios is common.
UHF, on the other hand, is an all-around better signal for long-distance communication. UHF is better when using radios for indoor use like in buildings or around cities. A plus to using UHF is you are less likely to be interfered with by other two-way radios. The reason why UHF is better for inside use as opposed to VHF is, UHF signal does a better job at reaching through wood, steel and concrete, therefore, can reach further into the building.
